"There for two-and-a-half hours they lose the appearance of human beings and become like beasts of the field."
While flicking through so
me channels, I have found this exciting game of football called Australian Rules. Otherwise known as AFL. This blog is going to be dedicated to this great game. Personally I have taken a liking to a team called Carlton Blues (http://www.carltonfc.com.au/) but there is much talent spread across all the 16 teams. Also lots of eye candy for the ladies! One favourite of mine is called Ben Cousins who plays for a team called Richmond Tigers. The image to the left is the symbol of the Carlton Blues. The image to the right is the delightful Ben Cousins.
A brief description of the game is, there are 22 players to each side. 18 on field and 4 reserves. The positions are split up into fowards, mid-fielders and backs. There are 4 posts for scoring. For 6 points it must be kicked in between the two middle posts (the taller of the four) and if kicked in between the posts on either side of the middle it warrants one point. While typing the rules may not sound too exciting, just check out a brief video from http://www.afl.com.au/ Of course there are rules and penalties given if any of these rules are broken. What I like best is its fast, hard and the men wear no padding at all. These are real strong and tough men from the hits I have seen. Its a damn awesome game. There are 22 rounds before finals, or post season as some call it. The top eight teams play against each other for one of two spots for the premiership. I am quite excited about this game and it has quickly become my favourite sport. Its very technical and acrobatic. Men just aren't meant to fly like some of these men seem to do when jumping for a mark. A mark is the ball caught on the full from their team mate providing it has been kicked for longer than 15 metres. I highly recommend you check it out.
There is a fantastic new advertisment for this season which can be viewed at http://www.afl.com.au/video/inaleagueofitsown/tabid/14032/Default.aspx this is one excellent promo ad. If you want to learn more about this game please check out http://mm.afl.com.au/afl_heritage/rules.htm This website has the rules plus history of this unreal game. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
